This book quoted many influential Germans throughout history and present time quoting thought provoking words of wisdom. I loved that this book didn't gravitate toward any thought or point of view, it was all encompassing. There was pessimistic and optimistic. cynical and believing, hopeful and hopeless, happiness and depressive, wisdom and ignorance, success and failure, superiority and weakness, gain and loss, virtuous and sinful, ethical and immoral, religious and atheistic....it included all views and perception and didn't make you sway in any particular direction. I'm not German but there are quite a few names I recognize in the book, those I don't will be looked up because several of them said some deep thought provoking things. I liked how Kindle seemed to organize some of the quotes as if it was a conversation, or as if two people were debating...quite entertaining! All in all, a great book for anyone who wants to know more about German thinkers, or people who want more insight into German heritage, or anyone who wants to ponder on life's great mysteries or humanity in general.

Jonathan Collins
The author only quoted maybe three pre-19th century Germans. Maybe it should be titled "Modern German Wisdom". Nonetheless, it is a wonderful source for modern German Social Studies.
