About this eBook

War looms on the horizon but Selene’s training as a wizard must begin, even though her age makes success nearly unattainable. Will searches for a solution, but their only hope may be a dangerous bargain with the king.

The fate of two nations lies on Will’s shoulders and the future is paved with violence. With few options, he needs the aid of uncertain allies and dubious friends. Traitors lurk among them, and soon he will be forced to choose who to trust—and who to sacrifice. For a terrible power has arrived in Darrow, and the price of victory will be paid in blood.

endearing, entertaining and exciting. I'm buying the 5th book to read next, even tho I don't always enjoy his writing style. Some sentence choices are cumbersome, the author overexplains frequently. but I have also enjoyed several truly masterful scenes in this series. and like I said, the story is interesting enough to make me buy the 5th installment. thank you Mr Manning for some worthwhile entertainment.

I just finished this book and it's crazy late when I'm typing this so don't expect any poetry or polish, but I think this is the best book in the series so far. The prose seems to have greatly improved and it reads like the author finally managed to lay hands on the editor I've been recommending since book one. Will is finally reaching the sweet spot of mind-boggling power that allows him just enough of a fighting chance to maybe survive even bigger messes. Including ones on the scale of worlds. I just wish I was better able to connect characters to names. Mostley I just stumble along. Other than that there's just one non-minor complaint I have about this book. The poor carriage driver! Will just gets a little landslide dropped on him and from about that moment on that poor dead driver is never mentioned again that I noticed.

The only complaint I have is that I've been completely caught up since the series debuted and I devour these books almost as fast as they're released. The storytelling is concise when needed, recapping and reintroducing characters is not used to pad the length, and the hard magic system is well crafted and adjusted through each book in explanation to match the characters growth. I see a lot of Mordecai in the protagonist, though, but I loved him so it's just a plus for myself. If you've found this series first, I highly recommend the first to tide you over until new releases!
