Ich hörte einen Schrei und richtete mich auf. »Hast du das auch gehört, Hernand?«, fragte ich den brutal aussehenden Mann, der neben mir hockte. Sein breites Gesicht war mit einem wild wuchernden, schwarzen Vollbart bedeckt.
»Was soll ich gehört haben?«, fragte er unwillig, ohne die Augen zu öffnen.

Ich lehnte mich zurück und schloss die Augen. Wahrscheinlich hatte ich mich getäuscht. Die lange Schiffsreise zerrte an meinen Nerven.
