This is one of those books that you need to get away from for a bit in order to write a review. I say that because the world these characters live in is exactly like our own. The depth of the characters is such that they spring from the page and take hold of the reader. With so much realism, it is hard to look past the supernatural elements that permeate the story. A seemingly ageless woman, a man with more talents and resources than time to acquire them, preternatural abilities aplenty, all these things leave you shaking your head at first. But once you step away, and let the story settle, you see it for what it is, a story. The credit goes to the authors for this almost Nonfiction Crime type setting. And as far as story goes, this one is a winner. So many plot arcs you need a flow chart to track them. Longtime Pendergast followers will find plenty of flashbacks and past references. Those new to the story will have a little catching up to do, but it can be read as a stand alone novel. Excellent pace through most of the book really keeps the pages turning like a good action story should.
