About the author

Dr. Kalyan Kankanala is the founder of BananaIP (BIP) Counsels, earlier Brain League IP Services, a premier IP Firm in India. He is a renowned Intellectual Property (IP) Attorney and holds honorary positions with Organisations and Centres contributing to IP law research and policy in the country. Dr. Kalyan heads the IP Strategy and Consulting Division of BananaIP, which helps clients maximize business value from their intellectual assets. He holds a Ph.D. in Patent Law from NLSIU, Bangalore, and a Masters in IP Law, Commerce and Technology from Franklin Pierce Law Center, USA. Dr. Kalyan is the primary author of the popular book on Indian Patent Law and Practice published by Oxford University Press in 2010.

 

Dr. Kalyan Kankanala works with clients like Samsung, DailyHunt, PEPS Industries, Mahindra and Mahindra, IIM, Bangalore (IIMB), IIT, Bombay, and BHEL. He worked with United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) as the National Expert on IP, and helped SMEs in machine tools, foundry and plastics clusters identify, protect and commercialize their IP. He advises Select start-ups, writers, artists and performers and helps them protect and commercialize their inventions and creative works.

 

Over the years, Dr. Kalyan Kankanala has helped several companies move up the IP value chain and gain substantial commercial value from their IP assets. He specializes in mining IP and devising strategies to help clients protect and maximize business benefit. He also specializes in effectively mitigating IP risks and constructively resolving IP disputes.

 

Dr. Kalyan Kankanala publishes extensively and makes contributions to IP law and policy in India. He is on the advisory board of well referred Journals such as Journal of IPR and Journal of Entertainment and Sports Law. Dr. Kalyan also provides pro bono advice and services to non-profit organisations working with persons with disabilities and creative upstarts.

 

During the last fifteen years, Dr. Kalyan Kankanala has played an important role in spreading IP awareness and building IP culture among corporates, research groups, academicians and students. Several of his students and trainees occupy senior IP positions in companies, research institutions and law firms.
