Howards End, and A Passage to India-is here analyzed within the framework of Forster’s cultural heritage nineteenth-century liberalism and humanism. In tracing Forster’s family and educational background, his religious and political heritage, and his relation to the "Bloomsbury Group," Mr. Crews reveals the growing melancholy in Forster’s acceptance of “the perils of humanism.”
