Edgar Allan Poe (ur. 19 stycznia 1809 w Bostonie, w stanie Massachusetts, zm. 7 października 1849 w Baltimore, w stanie Maryland) – amerykański poeta, nowelista. Pracował także jako krytyk i redaktor. Przedstawiciel romantyzmu w literaturze amerykańskiej. W jego twórczości dominowały wątki fantastyki i horroru. Zapoczątkował gatunek noweli kryminalnej (Zabójstwo przy Rue Morgue, Złoty żuk). Stworzył także pierwszą w literaturze postać detektywa – C. Auguste'a Dupina, który rozwiązuje zagadki kryminalne stosując metody dedukcji.
