About this ebook

First in the USA-Today bestselling Leigh Koslow Mystery Series!

"A funny, fast-paced, clever, and unusual mystery that will have readers clamoring for more. Sheer delight." --Carolyn Hart

The truth about what happened in 1949 went to Paul Fischer's grave... Too bad his body didn't!

Advertising copywriter Leigh Koslow doesn't pack heat -- just a few extra pounds. And she doesn't go looking for trouble. When she moved into her cousin Cara's refurbished Victorian house, she wasn't planning on discovering a corpse -- certainly not one that had been embalmed ten years before. But as anyone in the small Pittsburgh borough of Avalon could tell her, her cousin's house has a history attached. A history dating back to two mysterious deaths in the summer of 1949.

Someone wants Leigh and Cara out of the house -- someone who has something to hide. But that someone doesn't know Leigh's impetuous cousin, and when Cara digs her heels in, Leigh looks to her old college chum, local policewoman Maura Polanski, for help. But the answers the trio find only point to more questions. Were the scandalous deaths of fifty years ago really an accident and a suicide? Or were they murder?

The nearer the women get to the truth, the more desperate someone becomes. Because some secrets are better off kept. Especially when they hit close to home!

"A thoroughly delightful debut. Bright, breezy, and witty. I couldn't put it down." --Tamar Myers

Originally published in mass market paperback by NAL/Penguin, Putnam, Inc. in 1999.

Corker of a read - Loved it!! So well written & one of the best "cozy mysteries" I've read. The plotline is well thought out, entertaining & enthralling. The characters were also engaging with lots of depth, which is hard to find in these sort of murder/mystery novels. It's so wonderful when you find a freebie book that stands head & shoulders above the other muck & entices you to read more novels by the author. Highly recommended.

Entertaining and enjoyable although the ending was a bit rushed. I enjoyed the well-drawn characters plus the fact that the author didn't feel it necessary to drag in the stupid romantic bits that so often spoil this genre. 12.11.2020

When a decade old corpse shows up in the backyard, cousins leigh and cara try to figure out who, what, where, when, why without sending 7 months pregnant cara into labour or get themselves killed. Not your usual cozy mystery.

About the author

No matter the genre, USA-Today bestselling novelist and playwright Edie Claire strives to infuse all her writing with both warmth and humor. Her family-friendly Leigh Koslow cozy mystery series, a favorite of animal lovers that was originally published in 1999, was reborn in 2012 to become a USA-Today bestseller. Her romantic novels range from women’s fiction with romantic elements to a blend of romance and mystery, beginning with her traditionally published contemporaries, the award-winning Long Time Coming and Meant To Be, and continuing with the Pacific Horizons series, whose characters follow the migration of the humpback whales to some of the most gorgeous locations on earth. In any Edie Claire work, the reader may be assured that intrigue will beckon and tensions will rise – but love will triumph and happy endings will abound!

Edie has worked as a veterinarian, a childbirth educator, and a scientific/technical writer. A mother of three, she lives in Pennsylvania and aspires to become a snowbird.
