Escritor y periodista francés, nacido en Dieuze (Mosela) en 1828, y muerto en París en 1885. Colaboró en la fundación del diario Le XIX siècle, de orientación anticlerical. Publicó ensayos entre los que destaca La cuestión romana (1861), contra el poder temporal del Papa. En los cuentos y novelas mezcló el humor con elementos ético-sociales. Destacan La nariz de un notario (1862) y La historia de un gran hombre (1880).
