Sir Wingrave Seton, having spent ten years in prison for defending the honor of the woman whose evidence could have cleared him, is resolved that he will have his revenge on her and on every other person who crosses his path. He toys with Society, which courts him for his vast wealth, and ensures that everyone with whom he has dealings comes away regretting the encounter. Yet many of his schemes go mysteriously awry: men he bankrupt are saved by sudden windfalls; women he lead on are rescued from themselves at the last moment. Can he successfully carry out his elaborate plan to destroy the woman who betrayed him?
