The story of the fate of this soldier of the Empire has become a personal tragedy and universal that transcends all ages. En 1814 se trasladó con su familia a París, donde estudió derecho y empezó a trabajar en un bufete, pero su afición a la literatura le movió a abandonar su carrera y escribir el drama Cromwell (1820), que fue un rotundo fracaso.
