There is nothing better than a wickedly dark psychological thriller and The Man I Married fits the bill perfectly. It will have you questioning everything and most likely scrutinising your own relationship before taking the plunge! It is an intense read with some really good twists and turns to spice things up. Elena Wilkes has crafted a story that really gets under your skin. In a genre that is saturated with this type of story, I really enjoyed Elena Wilkes take on it. The mystery surrounding Paul and his previous relationship, does make it stand out above others and brings with it a point of difference. The characters are well rounded and developed and although I was not really a fan of any of them, they have been well written and evoke many emotions within you. They are also very believable and this for me is more important than whether I was able to connect with them. The Man I Married is a slow burn to begin with as everything is laid out, but it still had me glued to the pages desperately wanting to know how it was all going to unfold. The second half picks up the pace and has you flicking the pages a lot quicker and this is when it really gets the heart racing! As a debut novel, I think Elena Wilkes has done a great job with this story. It has been very well researched, plotted and although there are a couple of loose ends that are not tied up, still makes this a compelling and enjoyable read. Elena Wilkes is one to watch in the psychological thriller genre and I will definitely be on the lookout for more books from her in the future. Thank you to NetGalley, Hera and Elena Wilkes for allowing me to read an advanced copy of The Man I Married which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
