surprisingly, i was a little disappointed by this book. i really enjoyed the alchemists of loom, the world building and character development was amazing. however, the dragons of nova lacked that. there was a lot of character/chapter changes which made it hard to connect with the characters and really get into the story. it was as if i was reading the book but i didn’t get into it. it’s really weird because i usually love all of elise kova’s works. my biggest issue with the dragons of nova was definitely the chapter/pov changes. there were some characters that i couldn’t remember from the first book, some that i didn’t even like, and others where the storyline was just plain boring. i’m really not a fan of books with too many main characters. like, 2 or 3 is good, or stay first person so the reader doesn’t get confused. i absolutely loved the friendship between florence and arianna during the alchemists of loom, however we don’t get any of that whatsoever in the dragons of nova. definitely a big disappointment. also, i didn’t connect with florence as much as i had in the first book. maybe it’s a reading slump, maybe it’s the book. who knows. although i loved the alchemists of loom, i don’t think i’ll like the rest of this series if it’s going to be written like the dragons of nova was. it was a little too confusing and slow for my liking, but i’ve heard many good things about it. i wish i could’ve liked this book more as it was one of my most anticipated books.

I, like many others I imagine, got lured in via a sale on book one and simply had to snap up book two. It's been a quite enjoyable experience so far and I'm looking forward to book three.

Elise Kova has delivered another amazing story, that I devoured in under a day. I was a massive fan of Air Awakens, and I dare say that I actually love this world more. The characters connect with me better, and the storytelling is just phenomenal. Overall, this book is a five-star read. However, I still had a few issues and this is why: 1. There’s a typo near the beginning where Cva refers to Petra as his little sister, it’s small, but it’s still a little jarring for second, especially when everywhere else is consistent. That was the only typo I spotted, though, and for a book this long that is pretty awesome. 2. It wasn’t until the last 25% that I found Florence’s POV to be interesting, and I only even realized why we needed it in the second half. I found myself skimming her sections, because they seemed so discombobulated from what was going on in the rest of the book. She continued to accept people making decisions for her, and accept friends that really didn’t seem to care about her. I found it frustrating, and while frustration isn’t really bad, I didn’t care for Florence in this book AT ALL until the last 25%. Still, the ending gives me hope for her in the next book. 3. The first 80% of this rocked. It fit so wonderfully, and then Arianna, for all of her careful, calculated planning, make’s the stupidest decision ever. Now I understand that characters make decisions that we don’t always agree with, but this one thing that brought about the climax of the book—it was out of character. In my opinion, this was the first time that I have read a book by Elise Kova and felt that it didn’t fit, and more importantly, it didn’t make sense. I’m just going to leave it at that, this is a spoiler free zone. Those were all of my issues, and I debated on giving this book four-stars, and for this author it is a four-star in comparison to some of her other works. When I compare this book on an overall grand scheme though, it has pretty much everything. She brings up interesting questions about love, family, and morals. She writes about prejudice, politics, and hard topics that many authors don’t want to go into. She had sexy times, and for a fantasy author she did a damn good job at it. The setting is beautifully described, and so unique. Hell, her writing itself is just beautiful even outside of the characters and plot, the words themselves are all quote worthy. Overall, this book is five-stars, but for this author it was not quite as high as the bar she set with TAoL. Hopefully that is just second book syndrome, though, and the last book will be the best one yet. I highly recommend this series for anyone who love's fantasy with inspirational world-building, beautiful writing, and strong characters. --I received an ARC of this from Keymaster Press but it in no way has influenced my review--
