La baronessa Emmuska Orczy (1865-1947), ungherese di nascita, apprezzata pittrice oltre che romanziera, è oggi ricordata principalmente per essere la creatrice della Primula Rossa, ma diede un altro importante contributo alla narrativa popolare. A partire dal 1901 pubblicò sul Royal Magazine di Londra una serie di racconti gialli incentrati sulla figura dell’‘‘Old Man in the Corner’’, un vecchio signore che, seduto in una sala da tè, risolve i casi basandosi solo sulle informazioni fornitegli da una giornalista. È il prototipo del ‘‘detective in poltrona’’ al quale si ispireranno molti investigatori successivi. La strana morte nella sotterranea è qui presentato non nella versione originaria apparsa sul giornale, bensì in quella riveduta dall’autrice per la pubblicazione in volume nel 1908.
