El carácter artesano de todas las realizaciones plásticas del románico determina que estas obras -esmaltes, marfiles, orfebrería, etc.- tuviesen un valor y una estimación que en nada desmerecía de la que poseían la pintura, escultura o el edificio mismo. Cuando los reyes querían hacer una donación a una iglesia o monasterio era frecuente que consistiese en estas piezas, entonces altamente estimadas y que hoy, por un prurito de jerarquía y clasificación, se han denominado «Artes menores, o «Artes industriales».
