Der griechische Held Theseus war der Sohn des Königs Aigeus von Athen und dessen Gattin Aithra. Zu seinen größten Abenteuern gehört sein Sieg über den Minotaurus im Labyrinth auf Kreta mit Hilfe von Ariadne, einer schönen Tochter des Königs Minos. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters wurde Theseus dessen Nachfolger, herrschte weise über Attika und vollbrachte kühne Heldentaten. Zu seinen Freunden zählte der Halbgott Herakles (Herkules).
