The rain fell in relentless sheets, drumming against the windowpanes of the old, dilapidated mansion perched on the hill. "Evil Lurks," Tim muttered, gazing out into the darkness beyond the glass. "What a fitting name for this place."

"Don't start with the spooky talk, Tim," Beth chided, pulling her sweater tighter around her. "We're here for a weekend getaway, not a ghost hunt."

A flash of lightning illuminated the room, casting eerie shadows on the walls. In that brief moment, they caught a glimpse of an old portrait hanging on the wall – a figure with piercing eyes and a sinister smile that seemed to follow them.

"Who's that?" Emma asked, shivering involuntarily.

"No idea," replied Bruce, eyeing the portrait warily. "But it gives me the creeps."

The power flickered, then died, plunging the mansion into complete darkness.

"Great, just great," Beth muttered, fumbling for her phone to use its flashlight.

"Relax, it's just a power outage," Tim said, trying to sound reassuring. But a feeling of unease settled over the group like a heavy fog.
