Michelle Smith is the author of several books on parenting and pregnancy. The Fat Cat series is based on the true adventures of the Smith family's sweet Maine Coon, "Mama Kitty." Poppy Smith is a violinist and artist who spends her free time drawing anime and studying French and Japanese.

Based on the true adventures of our sweet Maine Coon, it keeps her memory alive and reminds me that life and happiness is pretty simple . . . and always should be. I've written a lot about pregnancy and discipline for children of all ages, but writing about Fat Cat keeps a smile on my face. My talented daughter illustrates and my husband does all the technical work, so it is a true family project, making it a very special part of our hearts.
I actually became an author by default. I started writing about the adventures of toddlerhood as a hobby when my kids would nap during the day. I kept that draft for years until a time in my life when I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. To get me distracted from my woes, my husband insisted we dust it off and get it published. There were, of course, eight hundred steps in between those two sentences, but the long and short of it was that my first book (Life with Toddlers) took a very (very) long time to get on the shelf. Several books and just as many years later, I still do not think of myself as an author; just a mom and speech therapist!"
