Pérez de Oliva, ilustre humanista español, autor del Diálogo de la dignidad del hombre, conoció a Fernando Colón, hijo del Almirante, y se dispuso a escribir la historia de sus viajes por las islas del Caribe. El manuscrito se perdió y no fue hallado sino hasta 1965. Es la primera crónica del descubrimiento y conquista escrita en español, la mejor narrada desde el punto de vista literario y la mejor muestra de la reacción humanista ante los problemas morales de la conquista. La introducción del profesor Arrom, y sus notas al texto redoblan el valor excepcional de esta edición.
