Obsessed by the picture of a woman in a magazine clipping, John Fenton sets out to find her, only to repeatedly gain and lose a fortune in jewels, participate in a tale-spinning contest at the Liar's Club, be mistaken for a prize fighter, impersonate a Count, break up a gang of thieves, discover his true identity and, of course, ultimately find the woman of the magazine, all the while being regaled with outlandish stories from everyone he encounters.
