About this eBook

Augusta County, Virginia, was created from Orange County in 1738. The work at hand was transcribed by the Thomas Hughart Chapter (Augusta County) of the Daughters of the American Revolution. It consists of approximately 1,800 of what purport to be the earliest marriages recorded in Augusta County. One assumes that these marriages were transcribed from marriage registers preserved at the Augusta County courthouse; however, the researcher will need to corroborate this because the compilers do not indicate that this is so. The marriages span the period 1785 to 1813. They are arranged in a rough chronological order and thereunder according to the name of the minister who solemnized the weddings. Each entry gives the date of the marriage and the full names of the bride and groom. Fortunately, the full-name index makes it easy to search for a particular individual.
