Nel gennaio 1981 Elvo Tempia, per esaudire la volontà del figlio Edo, stroncato da un tumore (melanoma) a 35 anni, promuove l'associazione "Fondo di solidarietà Edo Tempia per la lotta contro i tumori ONLUS", associazione di volontariato privata, autonoma, indipendente, apolitica, aconfessionale.
Nel 2005 viene costituita la "Fondazione Edo ed Elvo Tempia per la lotta contro i tumori" ONLUS, che si affianca all'associazione di volontariato Fondo Edo Tempia per sviluppare programmi di ricerca, di prevenzione e di cura dei tumori, dando continuità all'impegno di Elvo Tempia, mancato nel 2004.
