Rreth këtij libri elektronik

The year 1942 began with disaster for the Allies but paved the way to victory.

World War II was a conflict over land and resources but also democracy and freedom. The 1920s and ’30s had seen liberal democracy losing the fight against challengers from the Left and Right. By the end of the 1930s, Hitler had destroyed the few functioning democracies in Europe, and at the end of 1941, the future looked bleak, even as the US entered the war after the attack on Pearl Harbour.

But the year that began in such fear ended with the Allies winning victories everywhere—on land, on the sea and in the air. Discover what caused this drastic change of fortunes in the war and its long-term consequences.

Rreth autorit

David Pollard spent the early years of his career working in the area of social justice within the Catholic Church in Australia. His later career was in the Australian public sector. He is an economic historian and has published extensively in public policy and economics. He recently published an important work on Simone Weil.

As an economic historian, David has always been interested in the Second World War, its immense costs, long duration and its long-term effects on global politics.

He has a specific interest in 1942, a year that began so badly for the Allies but ended so triumphantly. In David’s view, this crucial year also saw the beginning of the modern age. This led to him writing Fortune’s Turn: The Desperate Year of 1942.
