C'est pour avoir si bien intériorisé cette recommandation de sa mère que le jeune Phùng Quan - petit gardien de buffles entré dans la Résistance à l'âge de treize ans, devenu à 22 ans écrivain célèbre - a été chassé de l'armée, exclu de l'Union des écrivains, et frappé d'une interdiction de publication qui a duré trente ans. C'est aussi pour cette raison qu'il occupe une place à part dans le coeur des Vietnamiens. Les récits autobiographiques rassemblés ici sont extraits de trois livres publiés au Vietnam fin 2007 (plus de 12 ans après la mort du poète).
