Young Charles Chesterfield belonged to a rural family of modest means. One day a letter arrived bearing the news that an old family friend has died and left 4,400£ and a magnificent diamond ring to Charles. This is enough that Charles will not need to work at a trade or a profession. Mr Chesterfield sought advice from his trusted friend and neighbor, Sir George, who advised that spending some time in London would broaden Charles' experience in the world. He offered to take Charles to London with him. In London, young Charles soon discovers many people who wish to make friends with a wealthy, naive young man. Charles' family on the farm fret about him, but one special friend is sure he will come safely home.
