About this ebook

The present anthology of texts in Latin, drawn from classical antiquity to the presente, containing seventeen chapters dedicated to diferente countries of the European Union and the candidate countries, intends to fulfil the following aims: 1) to consolidate the European heritage through collective, national and transnational reflection on its past; 2) to present an image of Europe in its unity and diversity, as envisioned by a group of classical language teachers from each of the member countries and from those who are candidates for inclusion; 3) to reflect upon what the European Union has been, what it is and what it will be, using as a basis our cultural inheritance as it is written in the Latin language.

About the author

Francisco de Oliveira. Professor Catedrático da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, onde se doutorou em História da Cultura Clássica. Cultura Romana; foi Presidente do Conselho Diretivo (1996-2002); da Euroclassica (European Federation of Associations of Teachers of Classica Languages and Civilisation); da APEC (Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Clássicos). Apresentou e organizou inúmeras conferências e seminários em Portugal e em numerosos países, com publicações em português, espanhol, francês, inglês e alemão. Entre as publicações incluemse traduções de Platão; a dissertação de doutoramento Idées politiques et morales de Pline l’Ancien (Coimbra, 1992, IX + 438p.); e Europatria (Coimbra, 2013, 538p.). Dedica-se em especial ao teatro antigo, à teoria política na antiguidade e aos estudos clássicos em Portugal em contexto europeu.

 

He is Tenured Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra. He was corresponding member of the of the Real Academia de Bones Letres da Catalunha, President and Treasurer of Euroclassica (Fédération Européenne des Associations de Professeurs de Langues et de Civilisations Classiques), and member of the Editorial Board of the journals Humanitas, Ágora and Máthesis, Advisor to the University of Salamanca’s journal Logo, Revista de Retórica y Teoría de la Communicación and Academic Consultant for the journal Letras from  the Pontifical University of Campinas, Brazil. He is currently preparing annotated translations of De re publica and De legibus by Cicero, of the Phoenissae by Seneca and of the letters of Pliny and Trajan. In the international context he is assisting in the production of a DVD about the teaching of Latin in the European Union (directed by P. Ieven, Belgium), and in a publication on the situation of classical languages in Europe (directed  by J. Bulwer, UK), and he heads the collaborative Europatria Project involving several European countries. He specialises in the thought and political ideas of Classical Antiquity, in the relationship between theatre and society and in the classical tradition in Portugal.
