About the author

Fridtjof Nansen (1861–1930) was an exceptional figure whose endeavors spanned various fields including sciences, exploration, and humanitarian work. Born in Norway, Nansen first garnered acclaim as a polar explorer and later as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate for his efforts in humanitarian pursuits. He studied zoology at the University of Oslo and showed an early aptitude for research, especially in neuroanatomy, but it was the lure of the Arctic that came to define much of his early career. He embarked on the audacious Fram expedition (1893–1896) aiming to drift across the Arctic Ocean, and although the primary goal was not achieved, he set a farthest-north record at that time. Nansen chronicled his Arctic adventures and geographical insights in his two-volume work 'In Northern Mists' (1911), wherein he provided historical accounts and his own analysis of Arctic exploration. His literary style combines meticulous research with rich narrative, conveying both the empirical aspects of exploration and his own reflective experiences. This work underscored his reputation as a leading figure in the history of exploration. Later in life, Nansen became a statesman, assuming the post of the League of Nations' High Commissioner for Refugees, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922. He left a legacy as a multi-talented individual who ventured beyond the constraints of his time to contribute to a wide range of humanistic and scientific disciplines.
