Modern societies currently lack positive alternative visions of the future. Paul Hirst is Professor of Social Theory, at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is the author of fourteen books including Pre-capitalist modes of production (1975, with Barry Hin dess), Marxism and historical uniting (1985), After Thatcherf (1989), Associative democracy (1993), and Globalization in question (1996, with Grahame Thompson). His work has been translated into German, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.
