Zerlumpt und abgerissen kam ich nach Amity, wo Rufus Parker Richter war. Ob der Staat Texas ihn in dieses Amt eingesetzt hatte oder ob er den Richter von eigenen Gnaden spielte, wusste niemand. Es interessierte auch keinen - mich am wenigsten. Deshalb sagte ich zu, als er mir anbot, Sheriff zu werden. Verdammt, ich hatte nur noch ein paar Dollar in der Tasche und war froh, dass meine Pechsträhne zu Ende ging. Außerdem galt Richter Parker als hart, aber gerecht - und er hatte eine Tochter, in die ich mich Hals über Kopf verliebte, als ich sie sah. Na gut, ich hielt mich also für einen ausgemachten Glücksvogel - bis ich feststellen musste, dass ich einen Job beim Teufel persönlich angenommen hatte ...
