“In the report, a 1989 nationwide survey of rural land transfers revealed that about 5.7 percent of parcels, or 3.5 percent of the acreage of rural land, changed ownership in 1988. Only 30 percent of the transfers involved more than 100 acres. Parcels of more than 100 acres, however, accounted for more than 90 percent of the acreage transferred. Over 66 percent of the parcels and over 50 percent of the acreage of rural land transferred in 1988 changed hands via voluntary sales. The rest transferred by gift, inheritance, foreclosure, family sales, and other nonmarket methods.”
