About this ebook

This report is the technical summary of a 15-month study into the application of nondestructive test (NDT) methods to determine the mechanical properties of metal matrix composites. A number of NDT methods aimed at the direct evaluation of mechanical properties were developed. These methods were vibration tests, ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurement, and acoustic emission. All methods gave very promising results and correlations and are potentially capable of development into industrial test systems. An analytic study of defect characterization in these materials indicates an inherently wide property scatter and indicates the theoretical effects of filament misalinement and filament breaks and of delamination. An industry survey was conducted and the general conclusions indicate a growing interest in complex shapes, which present no basic problems but require adaptation of instrumentation.
