Leslie Dreyfous first joined The Associated Press in 1984 and was a National Writer from 1990 until 1996. Born and raised in California, she is a graduate of Columbia University and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. Over her years reporting for the AP, she covered a variety of feature and breaking news stories that took her from the Arctic to Bosnia to America's tiniest back roads. Her feature stories included two in-depth series: one on Americans' relentless pursuit of individual happiness and another on the equally deep yearning for community, connectedness, and home. Much of the material for this book grew out of the interviews conducted over her months on the road.
