Der Film kam am 19. März 2004 in die amerikanischen Kinos und spielte seitdem 72,2 Millionen US Dollar ein. Die Hauptrollen spielen Jim Carry und Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst. Mark Ruffalo und Elijah Wood spielen, unter anderem, in Nebenrollen mit. Im Jahre 2005 gewann der Film einen Academy Award für das Beste Drehbuch und Kate Winslet wurde als beste Schauspielerin nominiert. Der Titel entstammt aus dem Gedicht Eloisa to Aberlard von Alexander Pope1 in dem Pope die tragische Liebesgeschichte erzählt, in der das Vergessen der einzige Trost ist.
