Der Wind des Schicksals hatte Gunlock nach Sonora im Sutton County, Texas, verschlagen. Es war ein grauer, diesiger Tag. Die Sonne war hinter einer dicken, grauen Wolkendecke verborgen und kein einziger Sonnenstrahl erreichte die Erde. Die Rancher und Farmer des Landstrichs schickten sicherlich ein Stoßgebet nach dem anderen zum Himmel, damit es endlich regnete, denn auf den Feldern vertrockneten das Getreide, die Rüben und Kartoffeln und auf den Weiden durstete das Vieh. Bäche waren ausgetrocknet, Flüsse nur noch brackige Rinnsale. Die Trockenheit wurde langsam aber sicher zu einer Heimsuchung für das Land.
