Highly enjoyable read. A timeless tale told through relatable lovable characters. The daily life and struggles of folks living in the Ozarks. Great historical read as well for anyone interested in South Western Missouri life before the railroad. Post civil war during the nearly lawless transition when Baldknobbers and vigilante justice still reigned supreme. I absolutely ADORE Googles stance on adding books from the public domain. This is so critical and simply...Awesome!!

I'm born and raised in these Ozark hills so maybe I'm a little partial. This is the greatest book ever written! I grew up just a few miles from the place this story is set. Today I travel every day over Dewey Bald, across the low gap and over Compton Ridge. Mutton Hollow is still rather wild. Man's scars of pavement and concrete have done little to detract from the majesty of the landscape that inspired this beautiful tale.

I live in Arkansas so the "hill" slang wasn't hard for me to understand. :) but the story line was lined out very well and the appreciation of nature is timeless.
