In this study, defence technology expert Lon Nordeen details the role played by the Harpoon missile in two Cold War flare-ups in the 1980s. The Harpoon was the first tactical anti-ship missile developed by the US Navy to provide a counter to the anti-ship missiles exported around the world by the Soviet Union and China. Lon Nordeen worked for over 40 years at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and then as a marketing communications and business development manager for various McDonnell Douglas/Boeing products, including the Harpoon/SLAM ER missile. He has long-term interests in aerospace, defence technology and military history, and is author/co-author of more than 12 books on these subjects, including four for Osprey.
