It is a comprehensive view of slavery (though technically fiction) based on some real accounts. Yes, the language, stereotypes of the native African, white supremacy, is painful to read.. To not engage in a "spoiler alert" I encourage all to read the WHOLE STORY! There are so many chapters that speak of courage, frustration, and faith of the slaves. You might even find that "Uncle Tom" was a lot stronger than the stereotype mentioned by some African-Americans today.
