About this ebook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NEWBERY HONOR AWARD WINNER

A classic YA novel about a teenage girl searching for a sense of home and family that celebrates the true spirit of independence on the American frontier.

For most of her life, sixteen-year-old Hattie Brooks has been shuttled from one distant relative to another. Tired of being Hattie Here-and-There, she summons the courage to leave Iowa and move all by herself to Vida, Montana, to prove up on her late uncle’s homestead claim.

Under the big sky, Hattie braves hard weather, hard times, a cantankerous cow, and her own hopeless hand at the cookstove. Her quest to make a home is championed by new neighbors Perilee Mueller, her German husband, and their children. For the first time in her life, Hattie feels part of a family, finding the strength to stand up against Traft Martin’s schemes to buy her out and against increasing pressure to be a “loyal” American at a time when anything—or anyone—German is suspect. Despite daily trials, Hattie continues to work her uncle’s claim until an unforeseen tragedy causes her to search her soul for the real meaning of home.

This young pioneer's story is lovingly stitched together from Kirby Larson’s own family history and the sights, sounds, and scents of homesteading life.

Hattie Big Sky is about a sixteen year old named Hattie. She is completely tired of being Hattie here-and-there . Soon her once and a life time chance comes up, when she is allowed to move to her Uncle's farm, where she has to face the Montana weather . Were she also makes the best of friends. She has to take her Uncle's crops into her own hands, and try to make a profit. The setting is very dry in the summer, very cold in the winter, and perfect in the spring. She lives in a small house made of wood. My recommendation for this book is that it was magnificent. Why, because Hattie Big Sky has a romatic slash mystery them. I would recommend this book for you if you like mystery, romance, and a little war. So I would read it again. So read it, because it is a very, very good book. My opinion of the book is that Kirby Larson can write a excellent book. I thought Hattie was normal girl but does things not every girl would do, she can make friends fast like most girls. She works hard I know for a fact many girls work to make a profit. I think many of the characters are different they all are kind, sweet, and mostly loving well almost all the characters at least. Hattie is a very good example for young girls not to give up. But will Hattie's crops make a profit, or will she have to give up the farm? Leah

I had to do this book for a historical fiction project in Social Studies class. I was so angry with my teacher for assigning me a book that looked terribly boring i didn't take the time to actually read it and focus on the details. i got a HORRIBLE grade on my project, but later in the year i went back and read the book, taking my time. It turned out to be an absolutely fantastic view and it's all i can do not to buy 1,000,000,000 more copies!!
