Das Schiff steht für die Lebensfahrt des Menschen auf dem Meer der Welt. Das in der Epoche des Barock bekannte Motiv des „Memento mori“, welches übersetzt „Gedenke zu sterben“ bedeutet, taucht insofern im Gedicht auf, als an mehreren Stellen anklingt, dass das menschliche Leben jederzeit durch Schicksalsschläge vorschnell und ungewollt zu Ende gehen kann.
