This anniversary edition means that the work, which has been out of print for so long, is now available again and has also been republished in paperback. It contains an unaltered reprint of 20 papers by acknowledged international authorities in the fields of archaeology, history and philology. The papers were originally delivered at a symposium held by the Commission for Central and Northern European Antiquities of the GAttingen Academy of sciences (1983). The volume aims to improve knowledge and understanding of the findings and approaches of the various disciplines to the topic of Germanic culture. Questions of sources and their interpretation run right through the book. The questions are as topical now as they were in 1986, and this volume still provides marvellous insights into the substantive and methodological versatility of research in Germanic studies.
