About this ebook

‘I loved this book… Sucks you in on the first page and doesn’t let you go until the climactic end… kept me hanging on to every word. Bonnie’s Book Talk, 5 stars

She lies so still. A tatty yellow dress, chipped green nail varnish, long eyelashes on pale skin. She should be at a sleepover, not lying in the dirt, her last breath already taken...

When the body of teenager, Chantal Price, is found hidden inside a grave, crushed under the weight of a coffin in a small-town cemetery in The Lake District, an urgent call is made to Forensic Pathologist Beth Adams. In hiding since an attempt on her own life, all Beth’s instincts tell her that it’s a trap, that she should run for safety. But one look at the beautiful girl’s broken body confirms she’s the only one with the expertise to crack this disturbing case.

As threatening gifts start arriving at her home, Beth is faced with the reality that Chantal’s killer knows about her past and wants her attention. She has no choice but to throw herself into her work, trawling through the evidence until she finds tiny traces of material beneath the victim’s fingernails that set the team on the right path. But this critical lead comes at a dangerous price, exposing Beth’s whereabouts and dragging her back into the line of fire once again.

With Beth’s own life on the line, the investigation is already cracking under the pressure. But this time Beth won’t run – she owes it to Chantal.

Then another local girl goes missing…

An absolutely gripping new crime thriller that will grab fans of Patricia Gibney, LJ Ross and Angela Marsons from the very first page and leave them gasping for breath by the last.

This book is a brilliant start to a new series. Helen does a great job in getting the reader’s attention right from the start with an opening that is so chilling that you know that you are going to be in for a wild ride, and what a ride it is! This is a well plotted and researched crime thriller that had me hooked right from the get go until the final page. Helen brings the story to life in the picturesque Lake District which she describes in perfect detail that you feel that you are also there. Of course not everything is rosy, and there is a sinister tone throughout the book as the reader is taken on a journey in a race against the clock to solve the crime and catch the killer before another murder takes place. The two main players in this book are well developed, believable and are brought to life beautifully in the pages of the story. I really loved the character of Beth. She is a strong woman that has survived a horrific attack where she nearly lost her life. She got through it, albeit with emotional scars that will most likely never go away, and when it looks like she is being targeted again, she draws on her strength and her trust in Josh to fight again. I also loved Josh. He is going through some personal issues but that doesn’t stop him in giving his all to the case and is a great ally for Beth. I sometimes find that it takes me a couple of books to gel with some of the main characters in a series, but Beth and Josh are a match made in heaven and I loved them instantly. They have a great chemistry together and I can’t wait to read the next instalment in this series to see how their relationship progresses. This is the first book I have read from Helen. She has an effortless style of writing which I loved. The short snappy chapters are also a bonus which made the story fast paced and left me wanting more. I look forward to more books in this series. Thank-you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Helen Phifer for allowing me to read an advanced copy of The Girl in the Grave, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
