Topics include the rights and duties of sailors, the punishment of offences committed at sea, the master's relation to the ship's owners, his duties in time of war and the carriage of goods. The Dictionary of American Biography describes this and Flanders' Treatise on Maritime Law (1852) as works that "gave evidence of deep research and unusual ability. Distinguished for lucid exposition and attractive style, these works in a short time became acknowledged authorities upon the subject with which they dealt" (III:454). Along with those of Hall, Kent, Phillips and Wheaton, Flander's Treatise on the Law of Shipping belongs to the select list of American works that defined the field in the years before the Civil War.
