I started reading this after learning that the subject, Lord Cochrane, had been the inspiration for the main character (Jack Aubrey) and several events in Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series. The book is an amazing insight into the political atmosphere of England during the early 1800s. The recounting of Cochrane's naval exploits are nothing short of incredible. Written by Lord Cochrane's son, the content may be skewed to favor the subject. Even considering the natural bias of the author, Lord Cochrane was a military and political superman who indelibly left his mark on history and was the ultimate public servant.
There are two volumns, but it is a fairly easy read. Use the "flowing text" option to make the text more legible and expect the occasional translation errors.
