(1819-1891). Quand sa famille connaît des problèmes financiers, Herman Melville s'engage dans la Marine. En 1841, il déserte d'un baleinier et se cache dans les îles du Pacifique. De retour à Boston en 1844, il écrit des romans d'aventures. C'est surtout au XXe siècle que son oeuvre a été reconnue.
Traducteur d'auteurs anglo-saxons. Auteur d'ouvrages pour la jeunesse. Père de l'écrivain Philippe Muray (1945-2006).
