Stephen grew up on a mixed, grain-livestock farm in near Oskaloosa, Iowa. He is a graduate with a bachelors and master’s degree from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He received his doctorate in agricultural economics at University of California at Berkeley in 1960, after service in the U. S. Air Force. He is currently retired and living in Reston, Virginia.

About the author
Stephen J. Hiemstra (PhD) is a professor emeritus at Purdue University where he founded and directed the first doctoral program in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Before coming to Purdue, he served in several federal agencies, most recently the President's Council for Wage and Price Stability. He received his doctorate in agricultural economics at University of California at Berkeley, after service in the U. S. Air Force.
