Ostensibly the story of a love affair between a Japanese architect and a French actress visiting Japan to make a film on peace, Hiroshima Mon Amour is a stunning exploration of the influence of war on both Japanese and French culture and the conflict between love and inhumanity.

Née en 1914 près de Saigon (Cochinchine), d'une mère institutrice et d'un père professeur de mathématiques, Marguerite Donnadieu se fixe définitivement en France en 1932. Elle se marie avec Robert Antelme en 1939, et publie son premier roman (Les Impudents), sous le pseudonyme de Marguerite Duras, en 1943. Résistante pendant la guerre, communiste jusqu'en 1950, ayant activement participé à Mai 68, Marguerite Duras a développé une écriture protéiforme considérable (cinéma, théâtre, articles de presse, romans et récits). Elle est décédée le 3 mars 1996 à Paris.
