One of the most intriguing minority groups in the Middle East is now a thousand years old. It emerged in the city of Cairo, spread to what is today Lebanon, Syria, and Israel, and subsequently became known by outsiders as Druze (in Arabic, Durooz, meaning Druzes). Samy Swayd teaches world religions, religious diversity, comparative mysticism, and spirituality and the ecology at San Diego State University (SDSU). In 1998, he established the Institute of Druze Studies (IDS) as an academic non-profit organization and two years later inaugurated an occasional scholarly publication, the Journal of Druze Studies (JDS).
