The Older Americans Act Amendments of 1973 require the establishment or maintenance of information and referral services within reasonably convenient access to all older Americans. Experience has demonstrated that information and referral services are not only essential to the linkage of older persons with resources essential to their wellbeing but, also, that they are potential sources of information for personnel charged with planning, coordinating, and evaluating community social services. I&R Program Configuration: A Guide for Statewide Planning has been prepared to assist States and other jurisdictions in determining the nature, location, staffing requirements, and other elements of information and referral services that will best meet the needs of their older populations.
