Great stuff , as usual , from Ian rankin. Do feel Rebus needs to hang up his boots and make way for Siobhan and Fox . Yes we'll miss him but he's becoming irrelevant. Aah. Still love him.

I'm a huge Rebus fan so probably a little biased in my praise for this book. It's up to the usual Ian Rankin standard and Rebus is as enigmatic and cantankerous as ever. However, there are a few things that stop me awarding it 5 stars. Firstly, there are too many characters in the book for me. I couldn't remember who was who and had to continually back track to refresh my memory. Secondly, and more importantly, it's all a bit far fetched. The fact that Police Scotland let this retired policeman interview suspects is pushing the bounds of credulity a bit too far. Finally, and this is just a personal view, is the fact the Big Ger Cafferty shows up again. In the whole Rebus series, Cafferty is my least favourite character and I'd like a book where he doesn't appear as the pantomime villain. It seems that Ian Rankin is finding it difficult to put Rebus to bed. He did it once in Exit Music only to resurrect him but I feel now the time is right for Rebus to have investigated his last case.
