In The Old Man a convict tasked with rescue a pregnant woman who has become caught in a tree after the Mississippi River floods. As the convict rescues the woman, the pair are washed away downstream and must struggle back up-river together.

His other works include the novels The Sound and the Fury, The Reivers, and Sanctuary. He twice won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and in 1949 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
